Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV to Offer 62 Miles of Electric-Only Mode
Volkswagen has revealed details about its upcoming Tiguan SUV, which includes a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model that could be a great option for those who want to minimize their use of gasoline. The PHEV version is expected to offer an impressive all-electric range of up to 62 miles, which is twice as much as the current Tiguan eHybrid and surpasses the 37.5-mile range of Toyota’s Prius Prime. This means that drivers may only need to use the combustion engine for longer journeys.
The jump to the new MQB evo platform (and thus new electric motors) is due in part to the expanded PHEV range. It also enables electronically controlled suspension, which promises better handling and comfort, and enables both faster AC charging in the plug-in model and DC charging. Now it is more practical to charge the Tiguan overnight or at a stopover, in other words.
VW has also renewed the cockpit technology. The infotainment system now uses up to a 15-inch screen and has a digital instrument cluster with a rotary control. There is even a nod to the ID series electric cars, with a switch on the steering column to change the driving mode. The new Tiguan is only available with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The updated Tiguan will make its official debut in the fall, with models hitting dealerships in 2024. We wouldn’t count on a North American launch of the PHEV version, as it hasn’t been available in the region so far. However, VW’s efforts hint at the direction of hybrids for the industry in general. Electric-only range is now good enough to cover a wide range of driving situations, and it can be tempting if you’re not quite ready to buy a pure electric car.
